Scene+ Explained: How Canada's Scotiabank, Sobeys and Cineplex Points Program Works

Scene+ points are simple to value: in most redemptions, 100 points equal $1. Here's how to earn them, where they go furthest, and the rules that can make them expire.

Couple on a city sidewalk at night with popcorn, a grocery bag and a blank credit card, for the Scene+ explained guide

Scene+ is a Canadian loyalty program co-owned by Scotiabank, Cineplex and Empire (the parent company of Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, FreshCo and Foodland). You earn points with a free membership card at partner stores and with Scotiabank cards. Its biggest strength is simplicity: in its most common redemptions, 100 points equal $1. Its biggest limitation is that it’s a fixed-value program. There are no airline transfer partners to stretch your points further.

This guide explains how earning and redeeming work, the rules that matter, and when Scene+ is a good fit.

How you earn Scene+ points

There are three main ways:

  1. Scan your Scene+ membership card or app at partner stores, such as Sobeys-family grocery banners, Cineplex theatres and Home Hardware. Membership is free.
  2. Pay with a Scotiabank Scene+ card. Scotiabank’s personal credit cards, many of its debit accounts and Tangerine products can earn Scene+ points.
  3. Book through Scene+ Travel, which is powered by Expedia. Scene+ says you earn 3 points per $1 on eligible hotels, car rentals and activities booked there. Flights booked through Scene+ Travel don’t earn Scene+ points.

Scanning your membership and paying with a Scotiabank card at the same partner store earns points twice: once from the store and once from the card.

Earning with Scotiabank cards

Earn rates differ widely across Scotiabank’s lineup. A few examples from Scotiabank’s card pages in October 2026:

  • The Scotiabank Gold American Express earns up to 6 points per $1 at Sobeys-family stores and accelerated points in other everyday categories, with no foreign transaction fees. Scotiabank notes the accelerated rates apply to purchases in Canadian dollars.
  • The Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite earns 3x at Sobeys-family stores, 2x on dining, other groceries, entertainment and daily transit, and has no foreign transaction fees.
  • The no-fee Scotiabank American Express earns 3x at Sobeys-family stores and 2x in some other categories.
  • The no-fee Scotiabank Scene+ Visa earns Scene+ points on every purchase, with bonus points at some partners.

Check the card’s current page for exact categories and caps.

What Scene+ points are worth

Scene+ is easy to value because most redemptions have a fixed rate.

Redemption Rate Value per point
Scene+ Travel (flights, hotels, cars, activities) 100 points = $1 1 cent
Apply Points to Travel (travel charged to a Scotiabank Scene+ card) 100 points = $1 1 cent
Groceries at Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, FreshCo, Foodland and participating Co-ops 1,000 points = $10 1 cent
Cineplex movies and snacks 100 points = $1 1 cent
Points for Credit (statement credit on other purchases) Usually lower Check before redeeming

So, for most people, 1 cent per point is the benchmark. A card earning 5 points per $1 at the grocery store returns about 5% in grocery value; one earning 1 point per $1 returns about 1%. Our points value guide compares Scene+ with programs like Aeroplan, which can be worth more but are harder to use well.

Two ways to redeem for travel

Scene+ Travel. Book flights, hotels, car rentals and activities on the Scene+ Travel site, and pay with points, a card, or a mix. It works like a normal online travel agency, and points redeem at 100 = $1.

Apply Points to Travel. Book travel anywhere (an airline, a hotel’s own site, a travel agent) and charge it to your Scotiabank Scene+ credit card. Then, within 12 months of the purchase, redeem points against that charge at 100 points = $1. Scotiabank says the card must be open and in good standing, and the merchant has to be recognized as travel by its systems.

Apply Points to Travel is the more flexible option, because you can book directly with the airline or hotel and still use points. That can matter for loyalty status, changes and customer service.

Grocery redemptions

At Sobeys-family stores, redeeming is straightforward: 1,000 points take $10 off your purchase. Scene+ also works on Voilà, Sobeys’ online grocery service, for earning and redeeming. For households that shop at these banners, grocery redemptions are a practical way to use points without planning a trip.

Expiry and inactivity rules

Scene+ points don’t expire on a fixed schedule, but inactivity matters:

  • According to Scotiabank’s Scene+ FAQ, your points won’t expire as long as you hold an eligible Scotiabank product linked to Scene+.
  • If you close the Scotiabank account linked to Scene+, your points stay in your Scene+ membership, but they expire after 24 months of inactivity.

Any earning or redeeming activity keeps an account active. If you’re closing a Scotiabank card, either keep a no-fee Scotiabank product, keep using your Scene+ card at partners, or redeem your balance.

Switching Scotiabank cards

If you move from one Scotiabank card to another, Scotiabank’s upgrade terms say your Scene+ points don’t change. Keep in mind that a switch usually means you won’t get the new card’s welcome bonus. Scotiabank excludes anyone who held any Scotiabank personal credit card in the past two years, including people who switch. See our product switching guide and welcome bonus eligibility guide.

Who Scene+ suits

Scene+ tends to work well if:

  • You shop regularly at Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, FreshCo, Foodland or participating Co-ops. Earning multiplies when you pay with an accelerated Scotiabank card.
  • You want travel rewards without learning award charts. Apply Points to Travel lets you book anything and erase it.
  • You travel abroad and want a card with no foreign transaction fees. Several Scotiabank Scene+ cards waive the usual 2.5% fee. See our foreign transaction fees guide.

It suits you less if:

  • You mostly shop at Loblaw-owned stores (Loblaws, No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Shoppers Drug Mart). PC Optimum is the comparable program there; see our PC Optimum guide.
  • You’re aiming for high-value flight redemptions, such as business class, where a program with transfer partners or an airline program like Aeroplan may get more value.

Maximizing Scene+ without overdoing it

  • Scan and pay. At partner stores, scan your Scene+ card or app and pay with a Scotiabank Scene+ card.
  • Use Apply Points to Travel within 12 months of a travel purchase, so you don’t miss the window.
  • Avoid low-value redemptions. Compare any redemption with the 1 cent per point benchmark.
  • Watch for partner offers in the Scene+ app, which can add bonus points on items you’d buy anyway.
  • Pay your card in full. At typical credit card interest rates, carrying a balance costs more than any points earned.
