PC Optimum Explained: How Loblaw's Points Program Works in Canada
PC Optimum points look huge but are simple to value: 1,000 points = $1. Here's how to earn them, where PC Financial cards help, and the inactivity rule to watch.
By Andrew Updated How we review cards
PC Optimum is the free loyalty program run by Loblaw Companies, used at Loblaw-owned grocery stores such as Loblaws, No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore and Zehrs, at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix, and at Esso and Mobil gas stations. Points are easy to value: 10,000 points are worth $10, so each point is worth one-tenth of a cent. The numbers look large, but the maths is simple: 1,000 points equal $1.
This guide explains how you earn PC Optimum points, how PC Financial credit cards add to them, how redemption works, and the rule that can close an inactive account.
How you earn PC Optimum points
1. Personalized offers. The core of the program is offers loaded to your account in the PC Optimum app, such as “earn 1,000 points when you buy this item.” They’re based on your shopping history and change regularly. You need to load them before you shop, and scan your PC Optimum card or app at checkout.
2. Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix. PC Financial’s site says all PC Optimum members earn 15 points per dollar on eligible purchases at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix stores. Shoppers also runs bonus events from time to time.
3. Esso and Mobil. Members earn points per litre at Esso and Mobil stations in Canada. PC Financial notes that all members earn at least 10 points per litre.
4. Paying with a PC Financial Mastercard. This adds points on almost everything, on top of what you earn by scanning your membership. It’s where most cardholders earn the bulk of their points.
How PC Financial cards add points
PC Financial issues three PC Mastercards that all earn PC Optimum points. Earn rates differ by card. Here’s how PC Financial describes the top-tier PC World Elite Mastercard as of October 2026:
| Where you shop | Points per $1 (or per litre) | Approximate return |
|---|---|---|
| Everywhere the card is accepted | 10 points per $1 | 1% |
| Participating Loblaw-banner grocery stores | 30 points per $1 | 3% |
| Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix | 45 points per $1 (15 member + 30 card) | 4.5% |
| Esso and Mobil stations in Canada | At least 30 points per litre | Depends on fuel price |
The card requires $80,000 personal or $150,000 household income, per PC Financial. Like the World Elite, the PC World Mastercard and PC Mastercard have no annual fee. They have lower income requirements and earn at lower rates in some categories. At Shoppers, for example, PC Financial says the card adds 10 points per dollar with the PC Mastercard, 20 with the PC World Mastercard and 30 with the World Elite. Check each card’s page for current grocery and gas rates.
The “approximate return” column is just the points value: 30 points per $1 is 30 points × $0.001 = 3 cents per dollar, or 3%.
How to redeem
Redemption is simple and fixed:
- 10,000 points = $10 off at checkout at participating stores.
- You redeem in increments of 10,000 points, so your balance needs to reach at least 10,000 points before you can use it.
- You can redeem at participating Loblaw grocery stores and Shoppers Drug Mart, among others, and choose how many points to use at the till or in the app.
Because every point is worth the same, there’s no “best” redemption to hunt for. The only strategy question is when to redeem. Some members save points for a big shop or the holidays; others redeem whenever they reach 10,000. Saving doesn’t earn you anything extra, so there’s little reason to sit on a large balance, especially given the inactivity rule below.
Shoppers Drug Mart sometimes runs “redemption events” that give extra value when you redeem a larger number of points on a particular day. When they happen, they can be worthwhile if you were going to shop there anyway.
The two-year inactivity rule
PC Financial’s FAQ says PC Optimum points do not expire, but your account can be closed if you don’t earn or spend any PC Optimum points at least once every two years. If the account is closed, the points are gone.
In practice, any purchase where you scan your card counts as activity. If you rarely shop at Loblaw stores, redeem your balance rather than letting it sit.
PC Optimum vs. Scene+
The two big grocery programs in Canada are tied to rival grocers:
| PC Optimum | Scene+ | |
|---|---|---|
| Grocery partners | Loblaw banners (Loblaws, No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Zehrs and others) | Empire banners (Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, FreshCo, Foodland) |
| Pharmacy | Shoppers Drug Mart, Pharmaprix | Not a main partner |
| Gas | Esso, Mobil | Not a main focus |
| Value per point | 0.1 cent (10,000 = $10) | 1 cent (100 = $1) |
| Travel redemption | Not the program’s focus | Yes, at 100 points = $1 |
| Bank partner | PC Financial | Scotiabank |
The headline value per point differs by 10 times, but that’s just the scale of the points. What matters is how many cents per dollar you get back. A PC card earning 30 points per $1 at Loblaws returns about 3%, which you can compare directly with a Scene+ card earning 3 points per $1 at Sobeys (also about 3%). See our Scene+ guide for the other side.
Most households pick the program that matches where they already shop for groceries.
How PC Optimum fits with other cards
PC Financial cards earn their base rate (10 points per $1 on the World Elite) outside Loblaw stores and partners. That’s about 1%, which is reasonable for a no-fee card but not exceptional. Many people use a PC card for Loblaw, Shoppers and Esso spending, and a different card for travel, dining or other categories.
PC Mastercards are Mastercards, so they work at Costco, which doesn’t accept Visa or Amex in its warehouses. See our Costco guide.
Common mistakes
- Not loading offers. Personalized offers usually need to be loaded in the app before you shop.
- Forgetting to scan. Paying with a PC Mastercard earns card points, but scanning your PC Optimum card or app is what earns offer points.
- Holding a large balance. Points don’t grow in value, and an inactive account can be closed.
- Paying interest. A PC card’s 3% at the grocery store is wiped out quickly at a typical 20% purchase interest rate. Our interest and minimum payments guide explains why.
