Scotiabank Scene+ Visa Card (for students) Review

by Scotiabank

By Card details as of How we review cards

The Scotiabank Scene+ Visa Card (for students) is the campus Scene+ Visa: $0 annual fee, extra cards at $0, 1x on every purchase, and 2x at eligible Sobeys-family grocers — plus 2x at eligible Home Hardware banners and 2x at Cineplex in the detailed features, which is a thicker bonus list than adult Scene+ Visa’s grocery-led table in that review. Eligibility currently requires enrolment in a certificate, diploma, or degree program at a Canadian post-secondary institution, plus citizenship or permanent residence.

This review is about movies, hardware runs, and Empire grocers on a Visa that campus tills will actually take, not about Gold Amex’s 6x.

Eligibility Requirements

Must be enrolled in a certificate, diploma, or degree program at a Canadian post-secondary institution. Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Who this card is for

A good fit if you…

  • Students who already shop Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland, or participating Co-ops, go to Cineplex, and maybe buy residence basics at Home Hardware, and who want Scene+ on a Visa without an Amex decline at the till.
  • People who redeem Scene+ at the movies or on groceries and would rather collect a modest pile than learn Momentum cash-back rules.
  • Applicants who have not held a Scotiabank personal credit card in the past two years if they care about the welcome points, and who pay in full.
  • Canadian citizens or permanent residents in a real post-secondary program — that is the eligibility text, not a study-permit improvisation.

Skip it if you…

  • Students whose grocer is Loblaws, Metro, Walmart, or Costco. 2x at Sobeys-family stores does nothing at those tills.
  • Students who wanted 3x grocery and 2x dining and will keep an Amex backup. That is the student Scotia Amex.
  • Cash-back students who do not use Scene+. Momentum No-Fee for students currently lists $0 cash back.
  • Anyone who held a Scotia personal card in the past two years and only wanted the bonus. Current eligibility excludes current and former primary or secondary cardholders, product-changers, and employees.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • No annual fee on a Scene+ Visa is the headline. You are not racing a Gold bill.
  • 2x at eligible Empire-family grocers plus 2x Home Hardware plus 2x Cineplex is a campus-shaped bonus list the adult Scene+ Visa review does not centre — confirm it is still live on the student page.
  • Visa acceptance is the practical advantage over the student Amex at merchants that skip American Express.
  • The current welcome path pays 2,500 Scene+ after $250-class three-month spend, then 7,500 more at $1,000-class — a larger second gate than the student Amex currently lists.
  • Additional cards currently show $0.

Cons

  • 1x on everything outside those bonus banners is ordinary. Dining, gas, and bills need the student Amex’s 2x list or Momentum if you care about those categories.
  • The two-year Scotiabank-card exclusion is the same strict rule as the paid Scotia cards.
  • Eligibility currently requires Canadian citizenship or permanent residence. International students should read CIBC’s student cards or BMO’s citizenship line rather than assuming Scotia will stretch this Visa.
  • Check the issuer’s site for current insurance coverage. This is a $0 rewards Visa, not travel medical.
  • The welcome-value estimate lists Scene+ points priced as dollars. The first-year snapshot may treat that number like cash — it is not.

Fees and value: is the annual fee worth it?

First-year snapshot (estimate)

Annual fee
$0
Estimated welcome bonus value
up to 10,000 bonus Scene+ points ($100 value)
Bonus minus fee (estimate)
$100

This is a simple comparison of the estimated welcome-bonus value against the annual fee. It ignores rewards on spending, credits you have to remember to use, and interest if you carry a balance. Offers change — verify with the issuer.

The issuer currently lists no annual fee on the primary card and $0 on additional cards, so there is no fee to earn back. The value test is whether 2x Scene+ at eligible grocers, hardware, and Cineplex plus 1x everywhere else beats student Momentum cash back and whether you will later wish you had the student Amex’s 3x grocery.

If those banners are already the week and you redeem Scene+, this is the obvious no-fee Visa. If dining is the campus month and tills take Amex, the student Amex is the stronger earner.

The first-year snapshot compares the listed welcome value against a $0 fee; remember that value is points. Offers change.

Pay in full.

Rewards and earn rates explained

Rewards program: Scene+ Points

You earn Scene+ points, not cash back. Detailed features currently award 1 Scene+ per dollar on all purchases, then 2x at Sobeys, Safeway, participating IGA, Foodland, participating Co-ops, FreshCo, Chalo!

FreshCo, Thrifty Foods, Rachelle Béry, Les Marchés Tradition, and Voila banners; 2x at eligible Home Hardware, Home Building Centre, Home Hardware Building Centre, Home Furniture, and homehardware.ca; and 2x at Cineplex theatres, the Cineplex app, and cineplex.com. Adult Scene+ Visa in our reviews leads with grocery 2x and 1x else — this student card’s detailed features are the ones that name hardware and Cineplex.

Merchant coding still applies. Redeem at Scene partners, Empire grocers, and Scene+ Travel.

For 3x grocery and 2x dining, that is the student Amex. For statement-credit cash, that is student Momentum.

Welcome bonus: how to unlock it

Earn up to 10,000 bonus Scene+ points in your first 3 months.

The current offer is two spend gates inside the first three months: 2,500 Scene+ after $250-class everyday eligible purchases, then 7,500 more if you hit $1,000-class — 10,000 if you clear both. Eligibility is strict: current or former primary or secondary cardholders of a Scotiabank personal credit card in the past two years, product-changers, and Scotiabank employees are not eligible.

Do not open this as a product-change from student Momentum and expect the bonus. Do not invent spend to clear a four-figure-class hurdle on a $0 card.

Welcome bonus eligibility: Individuals who are currently or were previously primary or secondary cardholders of a Scotiabank personal credit card in the past 2 years, including those that switch from an existing Scotiabank personal credit card, as well as employees of Scotiabank, are not eligible for this offer.

FAQ

Is the Scotiabank Scene+ Visa Card for students worth it in 2026?

It is worth it as a $0 Scene+ Visa if you already shop eligible Empire grocers, use Cineplex or Home Hardware, and will redeem the points. It is not worth it if your grocer is outside that family, you wanted cash back, or you held a Scotia card in the last two years and only wanted the bonus.

Student Scene+ Visa vs adult Scene+ Visa?

Adult Scene+ Visa currently lists $0, 2x grocery, and 1x else. This student card currently adds 2x Home Hardware and 2x Cineplex in detailed features, plus a student enrolment screen. Choose student if you are enrolled. Choose adult if you are not. Confirm both live tables; banners change.

Student Scene+ Visa vs student Scotia Amex?

Student Amex currently lists 3x grocery and 2x dining/transit at $0, with Amex acceptance limits. This Visa lists 2x grocery/hardware/Cineplex and works at more tills. Choose Amex if those banners take it and dining matters. Choose this Visa if you needed one network on campus.

What happens after graduation?

Expect a move to adult Scene+ Visa. Hardware and Cineplex 2x may not follow — adult copy in our reviews does not centre those banners. Gold Amex is a separate paid or waived adult step. Ask Scotiabank which earn table you will land on.

Can international students apply?

The eligibility text currently requires Canadian citizens or permanent residents enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary program. That is stricter than CIBC’s student cards, which currently mention international-student limits. Confirm Scotia’s live student page rather than assuming a study-permit file will pass.
