A good fit if you…
- Students who already shop Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland, or other eligible Empire-family banners, those tills take Amex, and who want 3x Scene+ without a Gold fee.
- People who also eat out, ride transit, stream, and go to movies, and can stack the 2x bucket on the same Amex.
- Applicants who have not held a Scotiabank personal credit card in the past two years if they care about the welcome, and who pay in full.
- Households that want a parent extra card at $0 so grocery can help the student’s Scene+ pile.
Skip it if you…
- Students whose grocer is Loblaws, Metro, Walmart, or Costco. 3x at Sobeys-family stores does nothing at those tills, and Costco Canada will not take American Express.
- Students who need one Visa that works everywhere. That is the Scene+ Visa for students at 2x grocery, or student Momentum for cash.
- Anyone who held a Scotia personal card in the past two years and only wanted the bonus. Current eligibility excludes current and former primary or secondary cardholders, product-changers, and Scotiabank employees.
- People who will pay for 6x grocery. That mix lives on adult Gold American Express, often with a fee waiver if you hold an eligible Scotia account after school.

- No annual fee on a Scene+ Amex is the headline. You are not racing a Gold bill on a student budget.
- 3x at eligible Sobeys-family stores is a stronger supermarket rate than the student Scene+ Visa’s 2x, if those tills take Amex.
- 2x on dining, entertainment, gas, transit, and select streaming is a real campus layer the student Scene+ Visa currently puts at 1x outside grocery, hardware, and Cineplex.
- Additional cards currently show $0.
- The detailed welcome gates are modest ($250-class then $1,000-class in three months) compared with Gold or Platinum.
Cons
- It is still American Express. Plenty of campus merchants will send you to the backup card, which then misses 3x and 2x.
- The welcome headline currently names an 80,000-class Scene+ figure “confirm on Scotia page” while detailed text currently totals 5,000 bonus points across two gates. We will not treat 80,000 as real. Use the detailed schedule and the live application.
- The two-year Scotiabank-card exclusion is the same strict rule as adult Scotia cards.
- Check the issuer’s site for current insurance coverage. This is a $0 rewards Amex, not travel medical, and the card’s features do not market it as a no-FX card the way Gold Amex is.
- After graduation you are not automatically upgraded to Gold’s 6x. You inherit adult no-fee Amex terms unless you apply up.

Those multipliers only apply when the merchant takes Amex and the category matches. Scene+ redeems at Scene partners, Empire-family groceries, dining, entertainment, and Scene+ Travel.
For 2x grocery with Visa acceptance plus Home Hardware and Cineplex 2x, that is the student Scene+ Visa. For cash back, that is student Momentum.

What happens after graduation?
