Best Student Credit Cards in Canada
Get a $0 student card on a network campus tills take, pay in full, and pick Scene+, cash back, or Amex by where you already shop — not by the welcome points.
By Andrew Updated How we review cards
The best student credit card in Canada is a $0 card you will be approved for, that works at the tills you actually use, and that you pay in full. Rewards are a tie-breaker. Scotiabank Scene+ Visa (for students) fits Empire grocers, Home Hardware, and Cineplex on a Visa. Student BMO CashBack Mastercard fits supermarket cash back and Costco. CIBC Dividend Visa (for students) is the Dividend cash-back path. Scotiabank American Express (for students) pays a stronger Scene+ grocery/dining mix if the merchant takes Amex.
You are not late if you open a card in second year. You are early if you open three in September. One card, on-time payments, low utilization, is how a student file gets built. The live list is on the students hub.
This is not a way to finance tuition. Student purchase rates are ordinary rewards rates, not “student discounts” on interest.
Eligibility before rewards
Canadian student cards usually require enrolment in a certificate, diploma, or degree program at a recognized post-secondary school. Some cards add an age band (BMO’s student CashBack review currently describes 18–24). Some require Canadian citizenship or permanent residence (several Scotiabank student cards). Some accept income from a job, student loan, scholarship, or family allowance because issuers know you may not have a salary.
Read the eligibility text on the card page. International students should not assume a “student” product will take a study permit. CIBC and BMO cards are often the first place to look if Scotia’s citizenship line blocks you. Approval is still not guaranteed.
Parents sometimes want an authorized user card instead. That can help a household shop. It does not always build the student’s own file the same way a primary card does. Confirm how the issuer reports authorized users.
| If you… | Look at first | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Shop Sobeys/Safeway/FreshCo and go to Cineplex | Scene+ Visa for students | Citizenship/PR; two-year Scotia-card exclusion on welcome |
| Want 3x-class Scene+ grocery and will carry a backup Visa | Student Scotia Amex | Amex declines at campus cafés and some grocers |
| Want statement-credit cash back on groceries, including Costco | Student BMO CashBack | Age 18–24 window; adult product after you age out |
| Already like CIBC Dividend cash back | CIBC Dividend Visa for students | Live grocery rate vs adult Dividend |
| Want Aventura points as a student | CIBC Aventura Visa for students | Points, not cash; portal habits |
| Want Aeroplan as a student | CIBC Aeroplan Visa for students | Only if you already fly AC |
| Do not qualify as a student | Adult $0 cards in the no-fee guide | Do not stretch the word “student” on an application |
Scene+ on campus
Scotiabank’s student Scene+ Visa currently lists $0, 1x everywhere, and 2x at eligible Sobeys-family grocers plus 2x at eligible Home Hardware and Cineplex in the student review — a thicker campus list than the adult Scene+ Visa centres. Confirm it is still live on the student page.
The welcome path in that review is staged (a smaller Scene+ amount after a modest three-month spend, then more at a higher gate). The two-year Scotiabank personal-card exclusion applies if you care about those points. Current and former primary or secondary cardholders, product-changers, and employees get cut.
If dining is the campus month and tills take Amex, the student Scotia Amex currently lists a stronger grocery and dining/transit mix at $0. Keep a Visa anyway. Residence convenience stores and small pizza counters are where Amex dies.
Redeem Scene+ where you already spend (movies, groceries) rather than hoarding for a trip you will take in 2029.
Cash back on campus
Student BMO CashBack is a $0 card: 3% on groceries and 1% on recurring bills, each on up to $500 spent per statement period, and 0.5% on everything else. The welcome offer is 5% cash back in your first 3 months. Cash back can be redeemed from $1, or as a recurring redemption from $25. New cardholders also get 3 months of Instacart+ and a $5 monthly credit. Purchases are 21.99%; cash advances are 23.99% (21.99% in Quebec). Insurance is extended warranty and 90-day purchase security, not travel medical. The 18–24 student bar is the constraint. When you age out, expect a move toward adult BMO CashBack or a conversation about World Elite if income appears.
Mastercard matters: Costco Canada will take it; a student Visa will not.
CIBC Dividend Visa for students is cash back on Visa. Compare the live student grocery rate with BMO’s 3% and with Tangerine if you do not need a student product at all. Some students have enough file and income for an adult $0 card and should skip the student label.
Scotia Momentum No-Fee for students is the cash-back Scotia alternative if you do not use Scene+.
What a student card is for
A student card is a thin-file product. The useful outcomes are:
- On-time payments reported to Canadian credit bureaus
- A credit limit you do not max out (utilization matters)
- One network you can use for rent-adjacent bills that accept cards, groceries, and a transit load
The unhelpful outcomes are a balance at the purchase rate, a late fee, and three inquiries from applying everywhere during orientation week.
If a parent will pay the bill, put the card in the student’s name only if the student will still see the statement. Hidden utilization is how files get wrecked quietly.
After graduation
Issuers convert student products to adult versions. That can mean:
- A new annual fee
- A different earn table
- A new income test for Infinite or World Elite
- A credit-limit review
Read the conversion letter. If the adult fee is real and you do not need the card, downgrade or cancel after you have another open account in good standing. Do not cancel your only card the month you apply for a car loan.
Adult $0 cards — Tangerine, Simplii, PC Mastercard — are the usual landing zone. Paid Infinites wait until grocery spend and income justify them. See cash back and no annual fee.
Common mistakes
- Applying because a campus table offered a tote bag. The inquiry stays.
- Using the card for tuition on a payment plan you cannot clear by the due date.
- Holding only an Amex on a campus that still prefers Visa.
- Ignoring citizenship lines and collecting declines.
- Treating Scene+ welcome points as cash in a budget.
What to do next
Open the students hub and read two live pages that match your grocer and network. If you are not sure you qualify as a student, use the finder and an adult $0 card instead.
Offers and enrolment rules change. This is not financial advice. Verify eligibility with the issuer. Approval is never guaranteed.
